Hi, my name is David. I am a sophomore currently enrolled at New Technology High School. We are starting an independent reading project where we will make weekly blog posts about the book of our choice.
Challenges as a Reader: I definitely enjoy reading books that I like. Most of the time, I dread having to read. I do see myself as an adept reader. My lexile range is 1160-1360. Reading has always come very easily to me. Another challenge for me is that a lot of times I feel that I read faster than I can comprehend. I often find myself re-reading a lot of pages.
Experiences That Turned Me Away From Reading: I think that I was turned off from reading because in elementary school the books were very basic and aimed towards 1st graders when I was supposed to be reading more advanced books for my level. It had stuck in my head that reading was boring. That books had nothing to offer. Also, in 8th grade, we read a book called Feed. I don't care to remember who wrote it. I just remember it being the literary equivalent of rough toilet paper.
How Can I Become A Reader:.I think I could start to enjoy reading more by not letting others choose the books I read.I should also read more about topics that piques my interest. I think a lot of people are forced to read and come to disliking it. Topics that I enjoy reading about are science and biology. I also love dinosaurs, that's why for my first book, I chose Jurassic Park by Michael Chrichton.
Good Experiences With Reading: One good experience I've had with reading was in 7th grade. We read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I personally thought it was a great book. That's really the only time I've enjoyed reading, aside from now, as I'm reading Jurassic Park.
